Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake.
…Henry David Thoreau
On a London train, I fell into conversation with a young boy named Joe. The oldest of three tow headed boys traveling home with their Mum after a long day, he was a little weary, and a bit fed up, too old to be entertained by childish diversions, too young to tolerate the boredom of a long journey. The family reminded me of mine, a long time ago. I’m pretty good at guessing ages, so that was my introductory gambit. “Are you nine?” I asked, and he nodded yes without the least surprise. Obvious. I asked him about his little brothers Johnny and Tom, and guessed their ages too, and soon we were chatting like old friends. Tom had a box of magic and was waving a wand about, and the littlest, Johnny, was doing a great job of a card trick with his obliging Mum. I asked old, weary Joe, what was his favorite thing to do? And he answered, “I quite like football, and outdoors, but mostly I like to go to my room and play with my imagination.”
